Selected activities for this summer’s program (registration required):

  • T-Shirt Design – Tuesday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. Teens will use their imagination to come up with a design for their shirt, whether it be the Mona Lisa or a certain motto. Participants must supply their own light-colored, pre-washed shirt.
  • Photoshop Workshop – Tuesday, July 1, at 6:30 p.m. Do you have an old photo you would like to touch up? If so, then sign up for this workshop on enhancing your photos using Photoshop Elements. It can be a pleasurable, unique, and eye-opening experience. You can learn how to manipulate photos to make yourself, or your friends, taller, shorter, older, younger, or even give them purple skin. The fun begins here!
  • Tatooing – Tuesday, July 8, at 6:30 p.m. Join us as we practice the art of tattooing and learn about the many designs people use. These tattoos are TEMPORARY so you don’t have to have them removed painfully with a skin graft. Apply tattoos on your friend or have them tattoo you. Be creative!
  • Old Books into Old Boxes or Purses – Tuesday, July 15, at 6:30 p.m. What do you do when you have books that have outlived their usefulness? Why not make a fashion statement with these books! Join us as we rip the pages out of old books and turn them into purses. There will be plenty of material on hand to stylize your new purse with your chic sensibility. For those who do not want to make a purse, you can make a special box out of the book. You can use the box to stow away your most valuable possessions. Later, you can decorate your purse or box according to your personal desires.
  • Cool Drinks – Tuesday, July 22, at 6:30 p.m. Get away from the summer heat and join us as we make a variety of cool drinks to lower your temperature and quench your thirst. Combine ice cream, yogurt, fruit, ice, and chocolate into interesting concoctions that you will be able to taste and enjoy. Bring your friends and family to this mouth-watering and delicious event.
  • Ice Cream Sundaes – Tuesday, July 29, at 7:00 p.m. Wrap-Up Party for all teens that complete the Summer Reading Program. There will also be a drawing of raffle tickets to determine the winners of special prizes.

DISPLAY – The Children’s Display Case is featuring a unique and interesting collection of Elephants. Stop by the Children’s Room and check out this fantastic exhibit on the largest animals that roam the earth today. These pachyderms will surely motivate us to continue our efforts to insure their survival for future generations. The display was organized and developed by Emily Orticerio and we thank her for loaning it to the library.

DISPLAYS  The library is always interested in having children show their collections in the display case. Please contact one of the Children’s/Young Adult Librarians in order to sign up for this terrific opportunity.

STUDENT AMNESTY - The Libraries of Smithfield are once again conducting the Student Amnesty Program. This means that any student in the Smithfield School System may return their overdue books to their school library. During the student amnesty period, which runs from June 1 to the last day of school, there will not be any fines for overdue books.
