In 1716 the Portsmouth Town Council authorized the construction of its first two schoolhouses. The Southermost Schoolhouse was built in 1725 at a cost of twenty-three pounds, twelve shillings, and seven pence on a lot now occupied by 102 Union Street. About 1800 it was moved to the south corner of West Main Road and Union Street. It remained there until it was replaced by the Gibbs School, which was built circa 1850. In 1863 the town sold the Southermost Schoolhouse and it was moved to Lakeside Farm (559 Union Street) where it was used as a harness shed for almost 90 years. In 1952 it was given to the Portsmouth Historical Society and it was moved for the third time to its present site. It was restored during 1969 and 1970.
