This structure was built during the second quarter of the nineteenth century and served the town for about fifty years, mainly as the office for the town clerk. It was replaced by the present Town Hall in 1895. The building was then used for storage purposes. When the permanent Fire Department was established the building was used as its first headquarters. When the present Fire Station was built in 1970, the old town hall was again used for storage. In 1975 the town offered the building to the Portsmouth Historical Society and it was moved to its present location. Many alterations had been made to the building over the years due to its varied uses.
This building is currently used for storage of fundraising items. It is a goal of the Society to restore the interior of the Old Town Hall building to provide expanded display space. Please check the News and Events page for updates on our progress in achieving this goal.
