Thursday, September 15, 7:30 PM-- Guest Author: R.A. Scotti, author of Sudden Sea: The Great Hurricane of 1938. Sudden Sea draws upon newspaper accounts, the personal testimonies of survivors, forecasters and archival footage. It is a poignant, detailed look at the destructive force of nature unleashed on New England and on Rhode Island in particular. Scotti, a former journalist for the Providence Journal and daily editor for The Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger, is the author of four novels. Following her presentation, Ms. Scotti will sign copes of her book provided for sale at the program by Waldenbooks, Wakefield.
Tuesday, October 4, 7 PM--Guest Author: Michael Tougias, author of Ten Hours Until Dawn: The True Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do. Tougias relates the true heroic tale of the attempted rescue of the crew of the tanker Global Hope off the coast of Salem, Mass., by pilot-boat skipper Frank Quirk. Quirk took his boat, and his crew of five, into the heart of the Blizzard of '78 in an attempt to save both the crew of the tanker and that of its Coast Guard rescuers who had run into trouble themselves. Tougias, one of New England's leading nature writers, is a syndicated outdoor columnist and author of 14 books. He frequently contributes to Outdoor Life, Field and Stream, Fine Gardening, Flower and Garden, Yankee Travel, Boston Globe, Farmer's Almanac, and Trout Magazine.
Thursday, October 20, 7 PM--Seals in Narragansett Bay--a talk by Robert Kenney, Marine Research Scientist, URI Department of Oceanography. Learn about these fascinating creatures in our local waters. Adults (also children middle school and older) will enjoy this informative presentation.
Sunday, October 23, 1:30 PM--"Your Favorite Books, Our Favorite Desserts"--This will be a great opportunity to get book suggestions from other book lovers. Bring three titles of books, new or old, and share with us why they are on your "favorites" list. (Participants will be limited to 5 minutes.) You bring the favorite book suggestions, we'll bring our favorite desserts to share! Held at the Peace Dale Library, 1057 Kingstown Rd., Peace Dale--call 783-4085 xt 112 to register.
Saturday, October 29, 4 PM--5th Annual Pumpkin Carving and Illumination--bring carving tools and a spoon; we provide the pumpkins and refreshments. Registration required, 783-8254.
Saturday, November 5, 10-1 PM--Altered Book Craft for Adults--presented by Julie Kennedy. Using an unwanted book as a canvas, participants will transform an old book into a new, personal artistic creation such as a journal, notebook or thematic book. Pre-register before October 22, 783-8254.
Thursday, November 10, 7:30 PM--Coastal Geology and the Effect of Sea Level Rise on South County Coastal Communities--a talk by Jon Boothroyd, State Geologist and URI Professor of Geology, Dept. of Geosciences. Learn what changes are in store for our coastal community and what our area will look like in the future.

Join us during the day and make a present to take home for that special grownup in Santa's Secret Workshop. No Grownups Allowed! Then make ornaments for home. Drop in anytime between 10 AM and 2 PM.
