The Jesse M. Smith Library
Animal Husbandry Links Page

What is Animal Husbandry? According to Webster's, it's the production and care of domestic animals. Animal Husbandry is a Special Collection of the Jesse M. Smith Memorial Library. Feel free to visit and explore our print collection.

Our Animal Husbandry collection covers care and maintenance of all types of pets and domestic animals, including some books on such fringe topics as aquaculture and gamekeeping. Our collection is geared towards the backyard farmer, homeowner, and hobbyist, not the commercial farmer or veterinarian.

The collection also includes participatory equestrian sports of all types, materials on horses in motion pictures, trick horses, etc. But please note that the topics of professional racing and rodeo are covered only in the most general and popular terms.

  • The Very Best Easter Pets

What are the very best Easter pets?
Stuffed or chocolate ones, of course!

At Easter, you can help prevent cruelty by giving your little ones candy or stuffed animals.

A live animal is a lifetime commitment, not a holiday toy to be bought as a gift and momentarily enjoyed. When you are tempted to make a present of a living Easter bunny, duckling, or chick, remember these facts:

    • Baby animals grow up to be adults who may not be so appealing to a child.
    • All animals require a commitment of time and energy— they need food, water, exercise, attention, and regular veterinary care.
    • Chickens, ducks, and rabbits need special care, and they are among the species that can transmit salmonella.
    • Baby animals can be accidentally killed or injured if children handle them roughly.

If your family is ready for a live pet, please consider adopting from your local animal shelter. And before you do adopt, be sure to visit PetFinder.com or your local library. They can help you find out what pet is right for you.
