Discussion Group Meetings: Fall 2008

This fall, there are three book discussion groups meeting at the library:

1. Book Discussion Group for Adults

The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month (except July, August, and December) at 7:00 p.m. in the library. Refreshments are usually served. All interested persons are welcome to attend, so please bring your friends.

Reading selections for 2008–2009 are listed at the right of this page.

The group reserves the right to alter the list at any time. If you are an irregular attendee or new to the group, please call or visit the library's website in advance to be sure of the scheduled title.

If you would like to join a book discussion group, but the time of our meetings is not convenient for you, please check out the Other Book Discussion Groups page which lists book discusson groups at other libraries in RI.

2. People & Planet Discussion Group

The Jesse Smith library is one of many Rhode Island public libraries collaborating with the URI Fall 2008 Honors Colloquium to bring about public discussion of human-caused global change, its consequences, and potential response. For more information about this important discussion group, please click here.

3. Star Trek/Star Wars Book Discussion Group

Thursday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m.

This is the new group's first meeting. Tonight the group will be getting organized and choosing books for the upcoming reading season. This group is open to readers of all ages. Please bring your ideas and suggestions— and bring your friends, too!

Additional Book Discussion Groups Wanted

Our book discussion group has been going strong since 2000, and it continues to attract new members. But we've been thinking that there may be other readers out there we haven't reached. Readers who would enjoy book discussions but find the present selection of titles or meeting times not quite right for them.

We would be happy to provide space for additional discussion groups if they would like to meet here, and the library will also assist with researching discussion questions and background material. If you'd like to take part in a Mystery Discussion Group or Science Fiction, Non-Fiction, Mother/Daughter, Books made to Movies, or any other area of focus, let us know and we will start a list of those interested.

Book discussions are stimulating and just plain fun! So, if you have an idea, please call the library 401-710-7800 and let us know. Thanks!
