1. How to get a card?

      You need to be a Rhode Island resident and show proof of residence and identity (Driver's license will do). We will copy this to the back of your application, which you will fill out.. Patrons that are residents of North Smithfield will be able to make use of the passes that we offer. Don't forget that you may order & renew books from this site. You may track the progress of your holds by using the patron information button.

2. Will my information remain confidential?
      Yes. Once it is entered into our system, authorized personnel only view this information

3. I live in a nearby state. May I get a card?
    Yes, for a fee of $23.00 annually you will be able to use the resources of our library. That is the ability to check out any of our materials, and use of the computers and their databanks for research.
A fee of $25.00 annually will allow the use of all the resources of the clan system. This means that you will be able to order books through inter-library loan from any library in the clan system.
All the requirements for a card are then the same as any Rhode Island resident

4. I am visiting from abroad, from a distant state or am a student at a nearby college. Can I use the computers in the NS library in order to access the Internet?
     Yes, on a one time basis.  We require that you read and accept the rules governing the use of the computers, and leave either your driver's license or passport at the front desk until you are done. 

5. What is available at the North Smithfield library?

In addition to books; hardcover, paperback and reference, we have magazines, newspapers, movies; dvd and vhs formats in juvenile, adult and documentary; audio books, both tape recordings and cd's.
In the children's room we have talking books, board books, beginning to read books as well as the usual full selection.
We also have puzzles and puppets that the youngsters may play with. 
We also have several computers that have ultra fast connection to the Internet. You must stop at the front desk first to register and read the rules that govern the use of these computers. Three of our computers offer the patron a full Microsoft office 2000 suite. We also allow the patron to use their discs. We do however encourage the saving of files to a disc that we provide. 
Each computer has it's own printer although we set them to black & white unless color is required. There is a small charge for each printed page. North Smithfield patrons have access to a powerful free search engine. You may access that site from the main page of this website...click on periodical search

Books can be checked out for a period of 3 weeks.

Videos and dvd's may be checked out for 1 week.  Dvd's must be picked up and returned to  this library.  We do not allow interlibrary loans of these items.

Magazines may go out interlibrary, and are also for a period of 1 week.

We have children and adult programs.  Check out the programs page.

We offer domestic fax services to the public for a fee of $1.00 a page.

We also offer copier service. We will do the copies for you for a small fee.

We have a  reference librarian, who will  help you find the answer to your reference questions.
