On Oct. 17, 1910 Julia Ward Howe died at her beloved Portsmouth home, Oak Glen on Union Street in Portsmouth, she was born in New York City ninety one years earlier. A room dedicated to her is located on the first floor of the Society’s museum. It houses a collection of furnishings from her beloved summer home in Portsmouth as well as a display in tribute to her life.
Julia Ward Howe championed many humanitarian & feminist causes:
- women’s suffrage
- world peace
- prison reform
- abolition of slavery
- support for immigrants
- education for women
